What is a die grinder
An angle grinder is a relatively small hand tool that can do a variety of different jobs. Depending on the accessory you use, you can use your sander to polish surfaces, cut materials, smooth rough edges on wood or metal, dehumidify rust, sharpen blades and more.
The list of accessories that can be used with a grinder is really impressive and shows how versatile the tool is. If I were to build my tool shed from scratch I would definitely include a grinder due to its versatility.
What is an angle grinder
Angle grinders serve a similar role to angle grinders, but there are enough differences to classify them as a separate tool. Angle grinders are large yet portable tools that come equipped with a disc. The disc rotating at a very high speed serves as the cutting tool.
Equipped with the right disc, you can use the angle grinder to effortlessly cut materials such as metal or wood, grind material and even polish surfaces. Here is oneAngle grinder uses listto understand the usefulness of this power tool.
So, just like angle grinders, angle grinders are very versatile tools that fit comfortably in any tool closet or garage. I wouldn't call them essential tools by any means, but they're certainly useful.
9 differences between the two tools
Alright, so I took a look at what each of these tools does. You can already see some of the similarities between the two. Both are versatile and can be used for polishing, grinding, cutting, etc. But what are the differences between the two? Well, I'll get into that in detail now.
1st project
The main difference between these two power tools is the design of the device.
An angle grinder is designed to work with fine grinding wheels. These discs are mounted on a rotating shaft that is perpendicular to the tool body. You can use the surface of the wheel for grinding and polishing while using the periphery of the wheel for cutting.
On the other hand, a grinder is a rotary tool designed for cylindrical cutting inserts. These bits mainly use their edge area for processing. For example hard metal files.
With a straight grinder, the cutting tool is flush with the base body. There is also a right angle version of this tool. you can see that...Difference between straight and angle grinders here.
2. Size: Angle grinders are larger
One of the main differences between these two types of tools is size. While both are technically handheld tools, angle grinders can be reliably held with one hand, whereas angle grinders require two hands. Also, angle grinders tend to be bulky tools with handles, while angle grinders are shaped like screwdrivers.
3. Power: The angle grinder is more powerful
Two of the biggest areas where these tools differ are in the areas of speed and performance. As I said before, angle grinders are much larger. Because they are larger, they can support a much larger engine. You can probably guess what I'm getting at with this. A bigger motor means a lot more power. While the exact difference varies by tool, angle grinders are generally roughly twice as powerful as angle grinders.
If you look at motor power, angle grinders are less than 1 horsepower, while angle grinder motors are in the 1.5 to 5 horsepower range. This extra power comes in handy in a number of situations. The extra power makes it very easy, for example, to quickly cut material or smooth material.
WhileAngle grinders are more powerful than Dremeltools, they cannot keep up with the cutting power of angle grinders.
4. The grinder offers better accuracy
Grinders are designed for precision work. They offer better control and maneuverability when cutting.
On the other hand, the angle grinder is a brute tool with brutal power.
4. Speed: The grinding machine has a higher speed
However, speed is a completely different scenario. Angle grinders are smaller than angle grinders, which also means they're much faster. In general, the speed ranges from 15,000 rpm to a maximum of 30,000 rpm.
The difference in speed may not be that noticeable at first, but if you directly compare the speed of a similar accessory on both tools, you'll see how much faster the grinder is. The higher speed allows the tool to work in a similar way to Dremel bits with small carbide files, diamond burs and mounted nose wheels.
5. The angle grinder is more suitable for cutting
With the angle grinder, it is not only easy to do the cutting work, but alsosecure. The safety protection on the tool prevents the fragments of exploded grinding wheels from flying everywhere. And believe me, this happens more often than you think, especially when cutting hard materials like steel.
You can use a cutting wheel on a grinder to do small cutting jobs. But they are not designed for such tasks, as can be seen from the lack of safety precautions. If you need a straight rotary tool with a cutting wheel, check out the guarded cutting tool.
6. Power supply
Another big difference is how the tools are powered. Angle grinders are almost exclusively powered by electricity. I can't think of an angle grinder that isn't powered by electricity or a battery.
Grinding machines, on the other hand, are mostly operated by compressed air. Many grinders also use battery power, but corded-only electric grinders aren't as popular.
7. Angle grinder covers a larger area
Angle grinders are designed to work with large diameter discs compared to edge tools mounted on an angle grinder. The disc, which is fixed in a mandrel perpendicular to the body, covers a larger area. This allows them to get their work done faster.
8. Flat vs. curved surfaces
Because angle grinders have a flat cutting surface, they work best on flat surfaces. They also work well on curved exterior surfaces that span a large area. For example, to polish a car body, you can use an angle grinder with a polishing wheel.
Grinders, on the other hand, are ideal for grinding and polishing holes, sharp curves, complex internal profiles, etc.
9. Angle grinders are more versatile
Don't get me wrong, angle grinders are great and a useful part of any tool shed. However, when it comes to sheer versatility, grinders come out on top. Angle grinders are generally used for cutting and grinding (although there are other applications they can be used for).
Grinders, on the other hand, are incredibly versatile. There are dozens of different accessories that you can use with your angle grinder and they help make it an extremely valuable tool. Like I said before, with the right set of accessories, you can do an insane amount of work with your grinder.
Conclusion: Which tool is better?
Ideally, you should have both tools as they are better suited for different jobs. But you are here to find out which one is best for your job. So let me close with my recommendation.
